Bundesliga – better than ever before

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Many German clubs are present in the European cups at the moment and following good results in the last couple of years Germany has finally overtaken Italy’s third spot in the UEFA ranking which means that Germany will have four places in the Champions League the following years. Hopefully the German clubs will be able to capitalize on this and be even more successful in the future. In my opinion the German Bundesliga deserves much more media attention abroad with its packed stadiums, goal scoring clashes and genuine profiles!

If we take a look at the last match day of the league we can notice quite a few interesting results.  HSV won “the Battle of the North” following a 4-0 victory over their fierce rivals from Bremen, all top 3 teams won their games and a struggling M’Gladbach managed to win at home to Schalke. Worth mentioning is also Frankfurt’s goal drought. The team from Hessen hasn’t scored one (!!) single goal in their last six games!  Last time the team scored was in the year of 2010. The team performed really well last autumn but now seems to have forgotten where the goal of the opponents stands.

Looking ahead of the weekend in front of us the big clash will take place in Munich. The “Reds” entertain high-flying Dortmund at home and this might be the match of the season in Germany. Bayern Munich have managed to close in a few points on Dortmund and see their opportunity to get even closer if winning at home to Borussia. Bayern are scoring goal for fun at the moment but Dortmund will be keen on winning and finally burying Bayern’s remote chances of winning the title this year. It’s hard to make any predictions on which team will win this clash but don’t be surprised if we get to see many goals. What about 2-2 (odds: 12.0) or 3-3 (odds: 40.0) as a final result? If I can have a say about your plans for the weekend I urge you to look at the odds, place a bet, sit down comfortably and follow one heck of a game!

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Cracking Champions League line up for Wednesday evening. A repeat of last years final, will Bayern get their revenge? Richie thinks that the odds on Inter (2.20) is very good and will back them heavily. Meanwhile Man Utd have a tricky looking tie at Marseille. Manchester United rested a lot of players in the FA Cup and will arrive with a different side against Marseille, Rooney to score gives you 5.50 times times the money.

HSV vs. Werder Bremen – Battle of the North

Friday, February 18th, 2011

The media reports from Germany this week have been dominated by the Hamburg derby that took place on Wednesday evening.  St Pauli, the smaller of the two clubs, had not won a derby since 1977 but managed to cause an upset in the Nordbank arena. Obviously in a derby like this the reactions were strong and the sport director of HSV announced that he wanted to throw up when having to witness the St Pauli fans celebrating their glorious win in the stadium of HSV.

Despite the derby loss Hamburg have got to get their mind and body rehabilitated very quickly because on Saturday they entertain Werder Bremen. Next to the derby this might very well be the most important game of the season for HSV. Hamburg and Bremen are two popular clubs in the north of Germany and both of them have been quite successful in the past. Throughout the years the rivalry between these two clubs has grown and the fans consider this to be the “Battle of the North”.

If you have a look at the table you can spot Werder Bremen at the bottom end of the table and HSV in the upper half. Of course this is a huge disappointment for the “Hanseaten” from Bremen who wished to challenge for a Champions League place this season. As a measure to improve the situation the board of the club brought some new players in the winter break. The Brazilian defender Samuel was bought from FC Sao Paolo and the Swedish promising young striker Denni Avdic was bought from IF Elfsborg. Avdic has not started a game yet but on Saturday he seems to have good chances of a place in the starting line-up! As for HSV the most famous players in the squad are the high flying Dutch striker van Nistelrooy, the Brazilian ze Roberto, the German national player Marcel Jensen and the Dutch star Elia.

What’s your pick on this clash? Do you think HSV will have recovered from the derby loss or will Bremen be able to deliver another blow? Take a look at our odds and give it a go!
