German Cup final = Party time!

Friday, May 20th, 2011

The Cup, or “der Pokal”, as the Germans prefer to call it, is massive in Germany.  Next to wining the Bundesliga the cup is the finest competition you can win. All teams take the cup very seriously and a ticket to the final in Berlin is highly desirable. Yep, that’s right the cup final is held in Berlin. The historic Olympiastadion is the place where two teams battle for glory every year at the end of May.  The cup final is just as much an important game for the players and the clubs involved as a big party weekend for the fans.  Usually the party for the fans starts on Friday evening and goes on to Sunday morning.

This year’s final included the teams of Schalke 04 and MSV Duisburg. Schalke have clearly been the cup team to beat this year in Germany. They made it as far as to the semi-finals in the Champions Leauge and are now in the final of the domestic cup. Unfortunately for the fans of the Royal Blues the team didn’t do as well in the league and finished in the 14th position. The opponents,  MSV Duisburg, are currently in the second division in Germany and should be regarded as big underdogs in this encounter. Obviously, nobody would have thought that Duisburg could progress all the way to the final since they are only second division team. As we all know cups have their own rules and these rules don’t always comply with the logic side of things. Could it be that the Zebras from Duisburg will  stand as cup winner’s tomorrow evening? Well, you never know. One game, one cup, one dream…and everything is possible.

Have your say at the final, place a bet, and celebrate alongside with all German football lovers!

A massive weekend in English football sees Manchester City attempt to win their first silverware since 1976 when they play against Stoke in the FA Cup Final, whilst West Ham must avoid defeat away at Wigan on Sunday otherwise they will be playing Championship football next season. However the biggest event is surely the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night and we have a red hot favourite in France but some lively outsiders in Denmark, Azerbaijan, and Estonia.
